How Many Meals Can You Get Out of a Ham?

I bought an 8 pound spiral sliced ham a the 29th of October. I paid $14.91 for it. Let's see what all I did with it.

16 sandwiches for hubby's lunch
2 fried ham dinners for us
2 ham and cheese omlettes
1 breakfast casserole
ham in one pot of navy bean soup
and finally...........

Wednesday of this week......the 19th I think I finally finished it up in a pot of bean soup. i used the ham bone, onion, carrotts, 5 kinds of dry beans, cumin, garlic, water and chciken boullion. it was delicious. We had enough for us and my parents for 2 meals and lunch for me today. It makes the house smell so yummy!

Grocery Budget

I am reposting this for Dana (Elijah's Mom). This is how we do groceries........

We have a grocery budget of $350.00 (as of January 2008) per month. it used to be $300.00 but with milk and things going up we had to increase. We are a family made up of husband, wife and 21 month old twin boys (that are little piggies). (The boys are now 27 months old.)This includes:

  • cleaning supplies (we try to make most of ours)
  • diapers/wipes
  • paper products
  • cosmetics/ health & beauty aides/toiletries
  • all food products

  • We try cook almost all meals at home. We usually eat out twice a month.
  • I try to bake a good bit for snacks and all.
  • I stockpile every chance I get.
  • We use Angel food Ministries (check out http://www.angelfoodministries.com/). There is no age, income or government restrictions.
  • Hubby takes lunch to work each day.
  • Only buy things on sale and use coupons.
  • I also use http://printable-coupons.blogspot.com/. I find great coupons on there.
  • I buy coupons from coupon sites and E Bay.
  • Comparison shop.
  • Use CVS to my advantage. (check out http://www.moneysavingmom.com/ for more info).
  • We grow almost all of our fruits and vegetables.
  • I can and freeze those. I make almost all of our canned tomatoes, green beans, peas, salsas, jams, jellies, butters, chutney, bbq sauce, spaghetti sauce, soups, taco sauce, preserves, relishes, pickles, applesauce, ketchup, okra and tomatoes, and so on so forth. Canning can be economical if you can grow your own and/or get your produce cheap.
  • I freeze okra, corn (on the cob and cream style), green tomatoes, peaches, blueberries, strawberries, freezer jams and so on so forth.
  • We deer hunt and eat the venison. We try to have a freezer full by the end of deer season, around January 31.
  • We buy some things in bulk.
  • We try not to buy much processed food, soft drinks (although, hubby takes a Coke each day in his lunch), pre-packaged foods and things of that nature.
  • I almost never pay over $2.00 per pound for meat. This includes b/l s/l chicken breast, center cut chops, roast, steak, bacon, sausage, ground chuck, tenderloin, cubed steak, ham, fish. The usual things. Hubby has to have meat with every meal.
  • We have 2 yard sales each year. 2 huge ones, at my parents home. They last 2 days and there is usually n o less than 7 families. The stuff is good things. No stains, broken or not usable items. All clothes are on a hanger and so on so forth. Everything is always priced with the person's initials on it. We advertise well and everyone knows we usually have one around the 1st part of March and somewhere between October 1 and November 1. On average each person usually sells around $500.00.
  • Now, to say my say here. All of the things I get for free or almost free from CVS and the like (that we don't use or have way too much of) I sell at the yard sales. For instance last year alone I got over 150 tubes of toothpaste fro free or no more $.25 each. I sold what we did not need for $1.00-$1.50 per tube. What does not sell I donate to the local Children's center or a women's and children's shelter. I also do stocking for each niece and nephew with toothpaste and toiletry items for Christmas each year. I make extra money and this supplies groceries for my family throughout the year.

I hope this helps someone needing to save a few dollars here and there. Please feel free to ask questions or email me. I can always use help and suggestions!

Blessings!

Going Over Budget This Month on Groceries

This month has been a little harder than most. We use http://www.angelfoodministries.com/ for our food and they decided instead of Alabama picking up their orders the middle of the month, we will began picking them up the end of the month. So that was 2 weeks to be accounted for in there. This is a great way to save on your grocery bill by the way!

Also, when we get our tax refund we usually restock on some things to last for another year or so. We have not had a cow slaughtered this year so we are a little short on meat compared to usual. Also we did not get our freezer stocked with as much venison as normal.

Needless to say we are going to be over budget this month, but that's okay. At least we have the cash and it will not be on a credit card!!! Can I get an AMEN? I found some great sales yesterday at our local Piggly Wiggly. they cut their own meat as well as grind it and they carry only black angus, so we love their meat department.

This is what I got:
2 family pk. Center Cut pork Chops $1.98 lb
2 med. pk. Ground Round reduced to $1.79 lb
2 Sirloin Tip Roast $1.99 lb
Salad bogo
2 1/2 lb. Red and White seedless grapes $1.59 lb
Hot Dogs bogo
2 Nutty bars .89
10 lb. bacon $10
chocolate ice cream $1.59 half gal.
4 lg. bell pepper reduced $1

I paid 55.63 ans saved about $45. I thought that was excellent. I am very tickled to be able to stock a little in the freezer!
Do you stock your freezer too? What do you put in it?

Blessings!!!

CVS Savings

I went to CVS today and I racked up. I also had a prescription filled and had a $30 coupon for a gift card. The cashier scanned the coupon first and was suppose to scan the gift card first, the manager had to be called, he had to inturn call the corp. office and it was a mess. Then I finally got the word that the coupon was invalid because the system had already read it (it had already been scanned) and would not take it again. So they said I could use it as a $30 store credit. But, I had to use it all at one time. MAN, that stinks. So now I will use it next week. I was so diappointed, but I tried to be nice and it worked. At least he didn't refuse to do anything. He did not apologize though and it was the store's fault. I forgot to take pictures of my bargains but here's the list of my loot:

2 Colgate tb $2.99each-$.75 coupon + $2 back in ECB each
4 post Cereal bogo $3.99 each -2 $1.00 coupons
1 gal. milk $4.29- $4.00 coupon for free milk when you buy 4 post cereal
1 Gillette Venus razor $9.99 -$2 coupon + $6 ECB back
3 Covergirl powders $7.99 each -$2 coupons each + $10 ECB back
I also had a $4 off of $20 coupon

total before coupons $60.01
after coupons $33.37 and I paid with $32.00 in ECB from last trip.
I only paid $1.37 out of pocket

Next:
2 pk. Huggies diapers $8.99 each -2 $1.50 coupons

1 - 24 ct. pk. Kotex pads $2.50- $2 coupon

How is it That Saving Money Can Make One Feel Better?

I love saving money. It is like breathing for me. My dear friend Jennifer met me and the boys in town today to give me a hand buying groceries and running errands. We went to the consignment store and picked up the last of my winter stuff and my check for the month. I also went by the post office and then off to Wal-Mart. While the cashier was quite unpleasant and thought I had lost my marbles when I told her I had "comp ads", she really gave me a look when I brought out my coupons. Nevertheless, she did her job and I got my savings while handling the situation "gracefully" as I was later told. So here's my savings.

2 pk. Pepperridge Farm 5 cheese garlic bread

Coupon Train

I and another reader (hi Nico!) friend belonged to a coupon train on a mom website. We lost all of our members except us 2. While that is great and lovely, I have a lot of coupons. I would like to start a train here on my blog. If you are interested please email me with your name, address and what coupons you need. blessedfrugalness@hotmail.com. We need 4 or 5 members. We will mail out on Monday mornings. 50 coupons. Your address will only be used for the train. This is a great way to get lots of coupons and give what you don't need. I hope to hear from you soon! If more than one train is needed we can make that happen to.

Blessings on your day!

DIY Haircuts and Manicure

My Mom and I gave the boys haircuts on Saturday and finished trimming up Tiger's today. that was $20 saved.

My nails were getting out of control so last night I gave myself a quick manicure, another $25 saved!

The boys actually did very well and my Mom is a pro at cutting littles hair. Thanks so much Mom! I am so blessed to have you!

Do you do your own hair, your kids, your nails?

2007 Savings

Here is my savings for the year past. Groceries include, paper products, groceries (of course), diapers, wipes, formula (the first 6 months of the year), cleaning supplies, health and beauty aides and over the counter medicines, ect.
I only shop on sale. I shop at Wal-Mart with competitior's ads. I use coupons. I love CVS. I shop there with my coupons, their coupons, Extra Care Bucks and sales. I get almost everything from there for free, usually. My savings reflect this as well.

January: $981.67 (We also bought a new vehicle and saved over $7000 on it).
February: $657.51
March: $789.84
April: $829.28
May: $981.54
June: $689.22
July: $781.31
August: $776.45
September: $494.41
October: $669.10
November: $908.48
December: $1012.11

That is a lot of change. I just wish I had it in my bank account.
Grand total withOUT the vehicle savings is: $9,570.92.

What a Bargain!

Saturday evening Bulldog and I had to go get my cell phone replaced. Don't care to discuss that, other than...... we had to pay almost $100 for a used one just like my old one. Had to do that in order not to extend the one year left of our two year contract. UHHH!GRRRRRR!

So on to my original post. We also went by Target. Here's what I got:
2 - 64 pk. Huggies diapers for $18.50 -$3 Target coupon and got a $5 gift card. That was okay but not as great as this one:

4 - 5 pound bags Russet potatoes on sale for $1.50 - $1 Target coupon on each. Made them $.50 per bag.
4 boxes Huggies wipes @ $2.39 each - $3 coupon on every 2 boxes. $3.56 for 4 boxes. MY total came to $9.33. I then used the $5 gift card. So I got 4 boxes of wipes and 20 pounds of potatoes for $4.33! Yippee!!!!

Check out: www.afullcup.com. Go to the left sidebar and click on Target coupon generator.

Look out CVS here I come. They are suppose to have some great buys this week too. Check out www.moneysavingmom.com for more info on that.

Happy savings!
